The Forest People

The Forest People (1988) by Colin Turnbull – Paladin Edition
Sold by Crappy Old Books – lovingly handled, probably by someone who didn’t believe in bookmarks.

Colin Turnbull’s The Forest People is a moving and meticulous account of life among the Mbuti pygmies of the Congo rainforest, blending anthropology with deep personal insight. First published in 1961, this 1988 Paladin reprint captures Turnbull’s rare combination of empathy and scholarship as he lives alongside a community often misunderstood or ignored by the outside world.

Expect laughter, ritual, and the occasional existential crisis—Turnbull’s writing is as much about himself as it is about the Mbuti. It’s the kind of fieldwork they don’t let you do anymore (and possibly shouldn’t have even then).

Our copy? Slightly foxed, a bit warped, and smells like a tent that’s been through one rainy season too many.
